Week of Aug 26, 2019-Aug 30, 2019

Good evening Parents and Students,

It’s hard to believe we are almost in September! We are approaching progress reports. Cooper no longer sends home paper copies, but parents will be able to see the updated progress report Friday, September 6.  Please contact the front office for assistance in accessing ParentVue if you have not been able so far. Don't forget this Wednesday is an early release day!

Our planned agenda for the week is below:

Monday: Understanding the difference between Greatest Common Factor (GCF) and Least Common Multiple (LCM). They will have two different methods they can use to find them. They should also recognize which one is being asked for in a word problem. They will receive the key words to help identify them.

---If you want a copy of the ppt we will be using in class tomorrow, just email us separately and we’ll share it. It has the main key words and models one method we will use to find the GCF and LCM-it’s called the SLED method.

GRADED HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTwww.usatestprep.com Students have the login information needed. Ten questions on GCF/LCM due FRIDAY, August 30, 2019

Tuesday: Same as Monday

Wednesday: Mini-touchstone (county assessment) on LCM/GCF (quiz) and classwork assignment in class (whether it is graded is TBD, it may come home to finish for extra practice).

Thursday: Review on fraction basics from 5th grade (multiplying fractions, simplifying, converting mixed numbers to improper fractions).

Friday: Dividing fractions (this is the 6th grade standard). Representing models and possibly showing the algorithm (standard method to solve). They are required to recognize the correct model of a division problem as well as know how to simply solve.

Week of Sept 2- We will continue dividing fractions for a couple of days after the holiday. Students should be prepared for their first UNIT test either Thursday Sept 5 or Friday Sept 6. We will send home a study guide by this Friday, August 30.

Helpful instructional videos for upcoming topics:

Modeling dividing fractions (this can seem confusing I know. I, Ms. Broussard, still have to practice the models a lot!) https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=modeling+dividing+fractions+video&view=detail&mid=353FB53547F562D51274353FB53547F562D51274&FORM=VIRE

Algorithm for dividing fractions (we are not allowed to simply say “keep-change-flip”. It’s “keep the first fraction then multiply by the reciprocal” of the second fraction)

We are really proud of the risks many students are taking in class.  They are becoming less afraid of making mistakes as they work to get better.  Thank you for YOUR part in making this happen!
