Week of Aug 5, 2019-Aug 9, 2019

Good evening parents and students,

We are off to a good start this week.  Today was my first day with the students (missed last week due to illness) and I was pleased with what I witnessed, overall, in each class.  So many of the students were displaying A.I.R. (Accountability, Integrity and Respect) qualities already.  While formal instruction had to start today I did take a little time to introduce myself and add on to what Dr. Obi (the other certified teacher in our class) already covered in my absence. If you are able please make sure your child has their yellow plastic folder-the middle prongs are needed to put in loose leaf paper and any notes we give them (two pockets as well). If you are unable to buy one by this weekend, please email me or Dr. Obi and let us know.  We can see if the social worker maybe has some.

I met with the math team today and we agreed upon our pacing for this week.  Below you will find the topics being covered each day.  Parents, please allow your child to watch videos and do online practice on various sites if they are needing extra help. A few websites I would suggest are:

www.IXL.com (good for basic practice on just about every 6th grade topic-you can create a free trial to test it.

www.khanacademy.org (this has GREAT instructional videos and practice problems with immediate feedback-free to sign up)

www.mathantics.com (Just an overall great site for engaging explanations.  Every topic isn't covered, but it has quite a bit).

www.usatestprep.com (Students will have homework from this site at times, but they can complete practice without an assignment being made)

Agenda this week: (NO CALCULATORS allowed for this unit)

Monday-place value review in class and adding and subtracting decimals-Students had homework tonight on this. They have the notes sheet. We did a few in class. Complete ONLY the front of the page (not multiplying decimals). Copy is attached in case they lost it.

Tuesday-adding and subtracting decimals day 2-to include word problems.

Wednesday-Multiplying decimals (they will have printed homework).

Thursday-Multiplying decimals day 2 and start GRADED CLASSWORK which includes adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals.

Friday-Complete graded classwork. Receive unit vocabulary in class.  They should be studying vocabulary for a few minutes each day.

**Next week we will be covering long division for 2-3 days, and then moving on to dividing with decimals. Those who have mastered it will have an extension activity to do in class for a few days. Students should expect a quiz by next or Monday August 12 on all the topics mentioned above. For many long division-the way most adults learned it (not 5th grade common core) is difficult, so please assist your child at home is you are able.

Whew!  That was a lot of information, but just trying to keep you informed. Thank you for support this year.

~It's going to be a great year!~

Ms. Angela Broussard and Dr. Agy Obi (1st period only has Ms. Broussard)

***I sent this information via Parentvue email as well.  If you didn't receive the email please check that your email is correct in the computer.  I had about 25 bounce back undelivered.
