Unit 7 Rational Numbers-week 1

NEW UNIT!  I love this unit and hope you do as well! We will cover two standards. There seems to be a lot typed but I promise outside of watching the videos ALL the assignments can be completed within an hour and a half-or less for many students. As always, I am available online to assist. You may also email me. Only half of the students have even started the work from last week. IF you have the technology and access to the internet please encourage your child (students encourage yourselves) to complete the practice so he/she(you) don’t get so far behind.  Regardless of when we return I want the students to still keep making progress. See the previous blog for those assignments.

Standard 1) MGSE6.NS.5 .

Kid friendly standard:

I can identify an integer and its opposite.

I can use integers to represent quantities in real world situations (above/below sea level, etc).

I can explain where zero fits into a situation represented by integers.

**ZERO represents a neutral number/level and separates positive and negative numbers.

-It can, for example, be used to represent something that is AT sea level. Positive integers would be ABOVE sea level and negative integers would be BELOW sea level.

-The video below gives an example of how you can relate to the integer -15 (owing $15). PLEASE note you would never say, “I owe negative fifteen dollars”, but rather just “I owe $15”.

Standard 2) MGSE6.NS.6a

Kid friendly standard:

I can identify the location of zero on a number line in relation to positive and negative numbers.

I can recognize opposite signs of numbers as locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line.

I can reason that a double negative is the opposite of that number itself; for example,  –(–2) is 2.

**The number zero is neither negative or positive and has NO opposite.

-The opposite of 3 is -3.

-The opposite of the opposite will always be the starting number.

For example, the opposite of the opposite of -5 is -5

Another example is, the opposite of the opposite of 12 is 12.
