Good evening Parents,

I apologize for not being able to send the agenda last week.  My laptop is needing to be replaced and I usually did the agendas late at night from home.  I did give a snapshot of what was coming the week before last, so everyone had an idea of what was happening.

Just a couple of items before the agenda: The students received an end of unit task Monday, September 9. It says "Culminating Task" on the front. I wrote the due of September 13 on it. On the previous agenda it says they were to receive it Thursday Sept 5, but I was absent. On Wednesday I told they students I would give extra time if they let me know ahead of time they needed it. Those that turned it on time (Friday) received extra bonus points. The rest were told to turn it in today for no late penalty. Since this not a "homework" assignment but rather a take home test of sorts we can take it late, but there is now a point penalty as per Cooper policy. Only a small number turned it in between Friday and today with several saying they didn't have time because of sports. This should be turned in before we go on the Fall break as that is when I expect to have them all graded.  Also, many students still need a Unit 2 folder, along with more pencils and paper.  The agenda is as follows:

Monday: Today we wrapped up our discussion of how to read, write and explain ratios. They did an activity with Skittles.

GRADED USA testprep homework on Ratios and rates has been added. It is due FRIDAY.

Tuesday: Mini-touchstone/quiz on RP1 (Understanding, writing and describing ratios as a relationship between two quantities)

Notes on Rates and possibly unit rates.  I have attached a PowerPoint we may use.  It will be beneficial to allow your child to view it at home for review (or preview).

Wednesday: Class practice on rates and unit rates to include learning how to determine the best buy with unit prices

Thursday: Same as Wednesday

Friday: Mini-touchstone on Rates, unit rates (to include speed) and unit prices-. Then a problem solving activity on Unit Price (finding the better deals)

***While the USA testprep assignment is the only "graded" homework it is expected that the students go home and redo 2-4 problems from class as part of necessary practice.  They will have problems printed, but again they will not be turned in for a grade. If they don't do them, however, they will not know what questions they have until too late. It is imperative that the students label the ratios they write when solving for rate and unit rate. The label will be the word or letter they use to identify what the number is connected to in the problem. The videos below give examples. You will see the "words" miles and hour in the ratios for example-those are labels (fraction form).

Helpful video links are below:

Unit rates-when they are finding the rate of 1 thing. For ex: If it's $4.99 for a 12 ounce bag of chips, unit rate is finding the cost for ONE ounce of that same bag. $4.99/12 =approximately 42 cents per ounce when rounded to the nearest hundredth.

We look forward to meeting as many parents as possible during conference week-information to come. If you are unable to attend in person because of the tight schedules we will allow for some phone conferences. We absolutely can't do our jobs well without your support, so thank you so much! It was great seeing so many this past Saturday.

Let's finish strong this week!
